With the recent passing of Lionel Combs, Sr. all 10 children born to Simon and Janie Combs have joined the family patriach and matriach in heaven.
Left to continue the Combs Legacy are the 2nd and 3rd generation children, grand and great grand children. Roots of Simon B. Combs
Simon Benjamin Combs was born April 1, 1896, he is one of 4 sons born to John (Hogg Combs and Eliza Combs. The brothers were: Casablanca (Cazzie), Burnam, Simon and Jim Combs. Simon's Father's roots were traced and the research revealed the following. Fathers Roots 1. Peter Hogg was born in 1786 in Whitesburg, Letcher Co. KY. No parental records were found. 2. He married Elizabeth (last name unknown) 3. Peter Hogg and Elizabeth had a son John Hogg-Combs born 1852. He is the father of Simon Benjamin Combs. Mother's Roots 1. Lancaster Francis was born 1809 in NC. There are no other records. 2. Lancaster married Rachel Ison in 1829 in Maryland. No other records. 3. Lancaster and Rachel married. 4. Their daughter Louizi Frances was born in 1857 in Letcher Co., Ky. 5. John Hogg-Combs married Louizi Francis and their children were: Casablanca (Cassie) Combs, Jim Combs, Simon B. Combs and Burnam Combs. Family oral history indicates: John Hogg son of Peter Hogg did not like their slave name (Hogg) and changed it to Combs. This is how the family?s last name became Combs. Combs Family Property The 95 acre farm located in Letcher Co. Ky was owned by John Hogg-Combs-John lived farmed and raised his family on the 95 acres of land. The land is still owned to this day by the families and heirs of Simon B. Combs and his brother Burnham Combs.
Roots of Janie Beatrice Combs
Janie is the daughter of Charity Olinger and William Combs, she was born April 18,1894 in Perry Co., KY and is one of 3 children born to this marriage. Janie's Father's roots were traced and the research revealed the following. Father's Roots (scroll to the end of the page to view the family tree) The family's oral history gives this account. Harriet Horton( slave girl) was born in 1815 and was given to the white Combs family. At this time there are no records to reveal who Harriet Horton's parents were. Research reveals that Harriet Horton and the slave owners relative Robert Combs (white) had a son who was named Jackson (Pap) Combs. . Research indicates their son Jackson (Pap) Combs was born in Perry Co., KY on June 1, 1847 and died January 30, 1941 in Perry Co. KY. Jackson married Jensie Holiday (white) who was born April 15, 1855 in Perry County, KY. There were no records to indicate who her parents were. Jensie died August 20, 1897 in Perry Co. KY . During their marriage Jackson(Pap) Combs and Jensie Holiday had a son William Combs.(see photo) William was born May 18, 1875 in Perry Co., KY. William Combs is the father of Janie B. Combs. Records indicate William Combs was shot and kiled during a dance party, in Perry Co., KY by someone shooting a gun through a window. Mother's Roots (scroll to the end of the page to view the family tree) William Creech-Birthdate unknown married Mariah Wilson ,who was born in 1820. In 1846 in Lee Co. Virginia Mariah Wilson gave birth to Drucilla Creech. Drucilla Creech (see photo) (Native American) is the mother of Charity Olinger (see photo)born 1872 in Lee Co., Virginia. Edie (no last name) was born 1810 in Pittsburg, Virginia (parents unknown) Edie's son was George Olinger, (see photo) born in Wilks Co. NC in 1837, his father is unknown. 4. Charity Olinger married William (Pap) Combs, (see photo) March 27, 1891 in Perry Co, Ky, to this union (3) children were born. They are: Janie Beatrice Combs, Floyd Combs and Virgie Combs-Turner.
