Harrison K. Walker, Sr. affectionately known as “Harry” and “Pop” to his family and friends, Harrison departed this life on Wednesday March 1, 2006.
He was the youngest of six children born to the late Karl and Mattie Walker on September 25, 1935 in Hazard Kentucky.
Harrison was educated in the Perry County, Kentucky School System. He was an avid basketball and football player at Liberty High School. After graduation, he attended Berea College in Berea, KY where he earned a BA in Economics. Later he continued his education at Trinity College in Washington, D.C.
Harrison accepted the Lord at an early age and he was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Hazard, Kentucky. After relocating to Maryland, he joined Cornerstone Baptist Community Church in Temple Hills, Maryland.
On February 2, 1959, Harry married the love of his life, Monica L. Combs and from this union two sons were born, Harrison Jr. and Anthony Ray.
Upon relocating to the Washington DC area Harrison was employed by the US Immigration and Naturalization Department. Next, he became a counselor at Junior Village until he started a teaching career at Western HS in Washington, DC and later at Anacostia HS, from where he retired in 1994.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Monica L. Walker; two sons Harrison K. Walker Jr. (Carla) and Anthony Ray Walker. Three grandchildren: Anesa, Isaiah and Monica Julie Walker. Two brothers Taylor and Russell Walker of Indianapolis, Indiana; one sister Mary Irene of Lanham, MD; Mother-in-law Mary Florence Combs; Uncle-in-law Lionel Combs, special nephew Jarvis Hagans, four sisters-in-laws and four brother-in-laws. A special friend Eugenia Robinson and a host of other relatives and friends. Services were held at Cornerstone Baptist Community Church, Temple Hills, Maryland and were officiated by Rev. Dr. J.W. Moses, Interim Pastor.
