Elton Thompson, Sr. was born July 20, 1893, in Pratt City, (Jefferson County) Alabama to Darcus Idaho and George Thompson, who worked as a miner. US Census records indicate that Elton finished 7th-grade elementary school in Pratt City. During Elton’s adult life he worked as a coal miner at ICD Railroad Company in Pratt City. At the age of 21 Elton Thompson was single and registered for the World War 1 Draft in Pratt City Alabama, where he worked at the IRD Railroad as a miner.
By April 3rd, 1920, Elton had moved to Hazard, Ky. Perry County Records indicates he applied for a marriage license with Sun Ella Branford. They were married in Hazard, by William Wells. Elton like his father began working in the coal mines. On January 2, 1928, Sun Ella died from complication of Tuberculosis.
By 1930 Elton is widowed and is living in Hazard, Ky living on High Street in the home of a stepfather John and Annie Hickman.
In 1940, 45-year-old Elton Thompson married Winnie Lee (Combs) Thompson and lived in a home he owned with Winnie, His daughter Barbara Jean, and his mother Anna Hickman. The 1940 Census record indicates Elton worked as a Porter for the L and N Steam Engine Company.
A World War 2 Draft Registration Card showed Elton, registered April 25, 1942, but he did not serve. Elton worked for the L and N Railroad in Hazard, Ky as a Porter. Elton and Winnie’s family grew over the year to four children four children; Arminta died at an early age due to injuries suffered in a fire; Barbara Jean Thompson; son, Elton Thompson, Jr. and Anna Bell Thompson.
Elton retired from the Railroad and Winnie retired from her career as a talented beautician and moved the family from Hazard to Dayton, Ohio to be closer to her other siblings who moved north. The Thompson’s purchased a home and opened it up to family and friends who enjoyed their love and generosity and hospitality.
There is not much information about Elton’s cause of death. He was survived by wife Winnie Lee Thompson, daughter Barbara Jean (Huey) Huggins of Cleveland, Daughter Anna Bell Thompson, Dayton, and son Elton Thompson Jr. of Dayton.
Burial records from the Perry County Library “Find A Grave” indicates that Elton Thompson is buried next to His wife Winnie in marked a grave at (Lick Branch) Town Mountain Cemetery in Hazard, Ky.
