Janie Beatrice Combs (Mamma Janie) was born on April 18, 1884. A lifelong resident of Hazard Kentucky she passed away in 1965 after a lengthily illness. Janie was married to Simon Benjamin Combs in 1911. The young couple did not waste time starting their family. During the next 18 years of their marriage Janie gave birth to 10 children. 1913 Winnie ,1914 John, 1916 James, Christine 1917, Edythe 1921, Evelyn 1924, Elizabeth(Bobbie) 1926, Charity , Simon (Paul) 1931 and Lionel 1935 Janie’s life was dedicated to raising her children, and she was also a community activist. She was considered a political power broker of that time. She was a staunch Republican endorsed and campaigned for many local and national candidates. Janie also worked outside the home at Western Auto. Janie was an excellent seamstress and designed and sewed dresses for her daughters. In the fall of 1945 Simon passed away after a battle with cancer, leaving her with 3 teenage children to raise. (Charity, Lionel and Paul). Janie was a strong Christian and was a lifelong member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Hazard, KY. In 1965 Janie passed on, leaving behind her 10 children, over 51 grand children and numerous great, and great-great grand children. She was a life long member of Town Mountain Baptist Church in Hazard, KY.
