John W. Combs, Jr, age 68, loving husband of Darrylyn Callaway Combs, unexpectedly transitioned to reap his eternal reward on Wednesday, December 28, 2016. John, affectionally known by many as "Bonnie" or "Hazard", was born on
February 21, 1948 to the proud parents of the late John W. Combs Sr. and Mary Florence Combs.
Being born and raised in Hazard, Kentucky, he was educated in the public school system and was engaged and involved in both football and basketball. He graduated from Kentucky State University and pursued a career as a teacher in Imch, Kentucky where he met the love of his life, Darrylyn Callaway. The love and devotion John and Darrylyn had towards one another led to their marriage of 45 years. God blessed their
union with two sons, John Combs III (Lexington, 10:) and Richard Combs (Florence, Ky). He was a loving and gentle father to their sons. His life was further blessed with the daughters he acquired with the marriages of John to Jennifer and Richard to Eva. Chelsea Perdue and John Combs Iv, both of Lexington, were cherished by their grandfather. The esteemed title of grandfather provided John with great joy and pride. He is survived by siblings Monica (Harrison, deceased) Walker (Temple Hill, MD), Josephine (Howard) Primous (Palm Beach Gardens, FL), Byron Combs (Louisville, Ky), Mary Walker (Lexington, Ky), Lenora Combs (Lexington, Ky) and Victor (Dorothy) Combs (Conroe, TX) and one aunt, Eloise (Pearl, deceased)
Cornett (Indianapolis, IN). He also leaves to celebrate his homegoing brothers and sisters in-law Flora (Leon) Monroe (Baltimore, ), Freddye Walker (Louisville, Ky), Synovia (Waymon) Brown (Ft. Wayne, IN), Arthur (Eleanor) Weldon (Jacksonville, NC), Harriett (Milford, deceased) Hillie (Detroit, MI), Harold (Frances) Callaway, (Las Vegas, NV), Rio Johnson (Atlanta, GA), Rev. Dr. Franklin (Barbara) Callaway, (Spring, TX), Willie (Silvona) Callaway (Evans, GA), Rhonda (Rev. Henry) Parker (Little Rock, AR), Anthony (Dr. Patricia) Callaway (Cary, NC), Iaquata (Kevin) Sykes (Johns Creek, GA); countless nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of bends, including Anthony Walker and Marvin Thomas. He was preceded in death by numerous aunts, uncles and a brother-in-law, Jerome Callaway.
John was a faithful member of Historic Pleasant Green Baptist Church for many years where he served on the Board of Trustees, Senior Usher Board and was responsible for purchasing food for various church functions. He was also a member of the Forty - Year Christians Group, Laymen's Auxiliary, St. Paul Missionary Circle, Men's Choir and cheerfully engaged in any other service at the church to serve others as needed. He especially enjoyed the camaraderie he shared with his fellow church officers as they parked cars on UK game nights Being an avid reader, which included science fiction novels and comic books, he found time to spend with family and friends and to assist anyone needing a helping hand or friendly conversation.
John was a good listener and had a special way of appreciating the value of everyone. John enjoyed fishing with his buddies and often went on fishing excursions with family and friends. As a loving and supportive father, he always attended his sons educational and sporting events and he continued the same levels of enthusiastic support with both of his grandchildren. For many years John found time to give back to the community by serving as a basketball coach to the neighborhood children. In addition, he served on numerous professional boards and committees.
John pursued his studies and earned a Masters' Degree in Public Administration. He is a former employee of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Kentucky State University, retiring with two outstanding and illustrious careers as a Human Resources Branch Manager and Personnel Director. John will forever live in the hearts and thoughts of the many people he touched over the years. We will long remember him for his kind heart, beautiful smile, kind patience, willing spirit and humble presence. He will be laid to rest at the Lexington Cemetery.
